Saddles after Service is a free pilot program assisting veterans and active members to pursue health and self-sufficiency using horses in a relaxed, comfortable setting. You will receive one on one mentorship with a horse expert and skill builder, learn horsemanship skills, and engage in mounted horse exercises.
Upon return from a war zone, reentry into “normal” life can be difficult. Research has found that time spent with horses in a positive and relaxed environment can be helpful in reducing stress and treating PTSD, ADD, anxiety, depression, trauma, brain injuries, and behavior/abuse issues. Horses are extremely effective at mirroring the attitudes and behaviors of humans. Interaction with horses and equine therapists allows you the opportunity to explore yourself and gain mindfulness and awareness.
Participating in the program will help
-gain self-awareness problem solving and communication skills
-physical, occupational, and emotional growth
It will help
-grow and extend to meet the needs of local Iowans.
