Steps of Hope - Overdose Awareness Walk

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Please join us at the DMACC Ankeny Campus on May 20th, where we will take Steps of HOPE for Overdose Awareness. We will meet at the gazebo, on the south side of DMACC Ankeny campus to walk around the pond. One loop around is 1.182 miles. There will be tables set up with free information to share and narcan training is available as well. Everyone is somebody's someone. Daniel is my son, and his battle with substance use disorder ended November 1st, 2020. His fight has always been my fight! The stigma surrounding addiction must stop. It is hurting so many and hinders recovery! My son had gone through treatment and had been clean over 6 months. It felt like we were standing on a mountain top, we finally made it. I was so proud of him. For the 1st time in his life, he was proud of himself!! Then on 11/01/20, the sheriff pulled into my driveway and delivered the absolute worse news any parent could receive, they were dispatched to a local hotel and upon arrival they found my son deceased from an accidental overdose. My whole heart shattered into a million pieces. This is not how our story was supposed to end!! Daniel always said that I should do an outreach. He said that I should help people like him. So, I honor my son by hosting this walk to help others. My son's death is Not in Vain! He is my son! He is a brother! He is a Dad!! No more shame!! No more stigma!! It can happen to anyone. Daniel should be turning 31, but instead, he is Forever 29. The desire is not to raise funds, the desire is to raise awareness, show support to so many others who "get it" and help others to gain an understanding. Educate, advocate and show every person effected by substance use that nobody walks alone! TALKING ABOUT OVERDOSE CAN SAVE A LIFE!!! TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! NOBODY WALKS ALONE!!!

5K For Food

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Two 8th grade cross country friends partnered to raise healthy packaged food for Waukee Area Christian Services. A few months ago, our school partnered with WACS (Waukee Area Christian Services) to provide packaged food for kids in low-income families in public schools. These kids qualify for federally assisted meal programs at their school and don't get food over the weekend because they don't have school. WACS provides packaged food for these schools to give to those students. The only problem with this solution is that the packaged food is not always very healthy. Kira and I got to know each other through cross country this fall, and so this problem touched our hearts when we heard that these children were not getting the nutritious snacks through the weekend that they need. As athletes, our goal is to fuel our bodies to be as healthy and fast as they can be. As our Take Action project for Civics class, we decided to provide WACS with healthy packaged food, such as That's It fruit bars, whole wheat crackers, rice cakes, beef jerky, etc. We are holding a walk/run on May 22nd @ 2 PM @ Raccoon River Park to run a 5K around the trail to raise food for WACS.
